Back in Azalea Meadow. Last week we saw a large rattle snake here. The concensus treatment for rattle snake bites seems to be as follows: 1) Keep the victim's bite below the heart if possible. 2) Keep the person calm and walk them to the nearest transportation. 3) Get the victim to the hospital as soon as possible. Do not try to make incisions or suck the poison out of the bite or use a tourniquet. Hospitals have very effective antivenom, but it should be adminstered within 3 to 4 hours. In the United States there are around 8,000 snake bites reported each year with about 10 fatalities.
