Notes on DBICCR #3, 2006

by Roy

The men's start of the 2006 DBICCR. We almost missed our time, but just did get it right.

Dipsea Boy: “Okay everybody, Scott here is your starter, the women and Dipsea Boy start first, and then twenty minutes later the rest of you go.”

A few minutes later…

Scott: “On your mark… and… go!”

Jamie: “WOO HOO!!! Eat your hearts out, suckers!”

With that, the women and Dipsea Boy are off on the third DBICCR.

Scott: “Okay, you’ll be starting in twen…”

Roy: “Hey everybody, we start in fifteen minutes. Be ready.”

Scott: “But I thought he said…”

Roy: “He just made a mistake, he meant fifteen minutes.”

Scott: “Oh. Okay everybody, we’ll be starting in fifteen minutes.”

Fourteen-and-a-half minutes later…

Scott: “Twenty seconds!”

Doug: “These are the guys that didn’t start with the women, right?”

Scott: “…five, four, three, two, one, see you guys later!”

Note that if the men actually had started twenty minutes after the women (and Dipsea Boy), then Jamie would have won the race outright. Ah, But the DBICCR is more than just having the best route and running fast, you also have to be in the right place at the right time. Fortunately, Roy realized that Dipsea Boy’s planning was off by five minutes and corrected the problem so he was able to share the victory with Jamie, which was way more fun than having a solo winner anyway.

It worked! Reliving the winning route at the finish.

The winning route went as follows: up the canyon through Janis Joplin’s old place, left at the square board trail, up the orange flag deer trail (careful not to follow those flags), up coasters and Indian to the top, down the first left to number 8, down inspiration (stay left at the Meaning of Life), right at the second wood chip clearing, left towards the lake (watch for Tomas, and don’t go right at the bathrooms, Judy!), up the 70 foot climb, right through the woods on the no-way-anybody-else-found-this-one short cut, stay right of the fence and take Doug’s variation, follow Sky Oaks to the end, left past the gate, right down deer skull, stay right of the guy’s house to the water spigot, out the driveway, left on Canyon, up Doug’s insult, grab your partner’s hand, smile, and cross the finish line.
