Looking past Half Dome up Tenaya Canyon from Glacier Point. The hike up this canyon can be done in a day leaving the Ahwahnee after breakfast and arriving at Tenaya Lake below Tuolumne meadows, hopefully by dark. There is no trail. Part of the canyon is a spectacular gorge. It leads to a hanging valley called Lost Valley with a beautiful cascade tumbling down into it. I've always wanted to make reservations at Sunrise Camp, one of the High Sierra Camps near the top of the canyon. Here, they provide beds with fresh linen, dinner, showers, and a box lunch for the next day. We could hike up from the Ahwahnee with light day packs, spend the night at Sunrise camp, and run back down to Yosemite Valley the next day via Cloud's Rest and the Mist Trail - a seventeen mile, mostly downhill run through meadows, forest, and open granite. |
